« Le français n’est qu’un patois qui a réussi. » In the words of linguist Henriette Walker, French as we know it today is a “dialect that won.” But what about the dialects that didn’t win? Many survive today as regional languages in France and neighboring nations. This session will give an overview of the history and current status of these languages, including efforts to revitalize them. Teachers will learn how they can use this information to stimulate discussion about language, culture, and policy in their courses. Ideas and resources for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels will be shared.
