Decolonizing Cultural Competencies in the World Language Classroom

PresenterKatelyn Schwartz

Saturday 1:30 - 2:30 p.m.

Conference Room IV

Recognizing that most languages taught in Colorado schools are the languages of the colonizer, leads us to also recognize that most culture taught is the culture of the colonizer. How can we look beyond a singular focus of what colonization left behind, to look at what existed before and what it blended with? This presentation will focus on identifying the presence of colonial culture, indigenous culture, where and how they have intertwined and its relevance in modern society while presenting the information in a comprehensible way.
